Haas Avocados
The Hass is the most popular avocado and the most common variety found on supermarket shelves. It is an oval-shaped fruit with a small to medium seed and it is best picked from September through to November. The Hass is super delicious and very easy to peel.
A Hass can range from 100 to 400 grams and has a distinctive skin that is rougher than other varieties. A Hass is perfectly ripe when the dark green skin has deepened in colour to aubergine or royal purple.
Plant nutrition and irrigation
Plant nutrition is critical to maintain tree health and produce high-quality fruit. We closely monitor plant health and growth and apply a scientific approach to crop harvesting, pruning, sampling, fertilisation and soil monitoring. We use leading irrigation scheduling and moisture monitoring technology to manage water demand and plant health.
Varieties
Our integrated pest management program uses complementary control measures to minimise our use of chemicals. We use biological controls (eg naturally occurring parasites, predators and pathogens of pest species) where possible. We monitor our crops regularly to determine when pests are present and only take corrective action when pests reach pre-set threshold levels.
Picking and Packing
Highland Home Farm has stringent harvesting, handling and quality management systems to ensure that fruit quality is maintained from the field operations to the packing shed. Fruit is harvested by hand and transported carefully in picking bins to our 4000m2 packing, cold storage and ripening facility.
Processing and storage
Highland Home Farm's packing facility is designed to treat, grade and pack three million trays of fruit annually. We use lean manufacturing principles to maximise the efficiency and productivity of each of the packing operations. Fruit is stored in temperature-controlled rooms and processed to the highest standard for transport interstate or internationally. Fruit is available in packaging options from small net bags and trays to high volume export cartons.
